Good morning and Welcome! to The Fool’s Tarot for 30Aug2016. (Today’s deck is the *Ludy Lescot Tarot* by Patrizio Evangelisti and Ludy Lescot.) I was feeling a bit more Tarot-ish this a.m. and decided to pull a simple 2-card Goal/Opposition draw for today. I pulled 1) the 3 of Cups and 2) IV The Emperor. Well, that’s big-time opposition! The only person in my life capable of providing that kind of firepower to the enemy is me, myself. So, my opposition will be coming from within today. Okay, good to know. First, however, let’s look at my idea of today’s goal, and Yep! It looks right on the money, the 3 of Cups. For a long, LONG time now my emotional goal has been this 3. The LWB for the deck makes an amusing remark, “Even if you cannot live like a wild animal, give up your fear of being happy.” Powerful words, though, especially for me, because try as I might, I simply cannot carry my “wild animal” side all by myself, and I DO need company & happiness to feel emotionally whole. Well, perhaps “need” isn’t the right word, but in the sense of “you need it if you are going to become big & strong” [two MORE “dubious positive values.”] For what seems eternities now I have been searching for the “correct” & balanced emotional living and loving arrangement that is more commonly called a threesome. I am bisexual; my wife is heterosexual and I wish to find THE right guy to add to our mix and as a reagent he will transform the whole 2 to a whole 3 and thus we will be back at unity in One. Now if that seems confused or unintelligible, I can understand, but the method to my madness is to fulfill the purpose of my WHOLE being, and “this time around” I would like to reach a stage where 3 = 2 = 1, and our ship of three is happy sailing the high seas. There are all sorts of complications and more baroque circumstances to some areas of my relationship(s), but that is exactly why I wish to add a gentleman to the mix. It isn’t about sex; it really isn’t, despite strong thoughts to the contrary. It is about who I want to love, and being able to do so. ALL AT THE SAME TIME. THAT’S the happy ending I want. Getting it, however, is another question. Yes, I may Will it into manifestation, but I’m not sure that a conscious approach to “love” is a good thing. To tell the truth, I know men NOW whom I would be happy to include, in a heartbeat! save that we are plagued by distance and desire for stability, which to most people sounds like 2 and only two. I’m taking this card this morning as encouragement NOT to give up, yet. It may be around the corner, it may not, but the essence of “surrender” isn’t what is needed here, but the essence of Hope. (Seeing that I am already 64 the racetrack is dangerously fragile but still usable.) As in most things, “on verra.” (“We’ll see.”)
However, and it is a BIG however, it seems that I am being mightily opposed in this endeavor by . . . me. Yep, I can’t turn away or pretend it isn’t, because it is, that’s me sitting there on that card. Again, Ludy’s LWB brings something humorous but true to the draw; “Beauty does not move the world; money does not move the world; intelligence does not move the world. If you want to move the world, be yourself.” Grin, it’s a lovely AND true sentiment; I’m just not so sure it is about the Emperor, however. He isn’t about “being yourself,” (I’m not saying he stands against it, either!) he’s a whole other order of magnitude larger than that, when being yourself is being the world is being the universe is being an incarnation of the Male and all that goes with a righteous man. (Some of that, remember, is awfully narrow-minded and stick-up-the-butt-ish.) I’m old and wise enough to recognize me when I see me, complete with faults and limitations, and yes, the Emperor very easily pegs me in a certain hole, gives flesh to a certain reality about me. I am a high-maintenance Aries with a lot of Fire and no doubt at all about my own intelligence and willpower. I do not lack self-worth or self-confidence. I count on it too much, perhaps, which is where my fault lies. I DO notice the Emperor is looking directly over to the 3 of Cups, so he IS aware of her, her needs. It may be (read: it is) my imagination but I seem to think there is some indulgence in that gaze, but again, perhaps that is only me wishfully thinking. I do notice that between us soars an eagle; perhaps indicative of Air/Swords temperament, perhaps indicative of someone else “flying in,” but that is a stretch. On verra. On the whole, I can FEEL inside him the regret for the necessity of shutting down her little operation for the benefit of the Ma’at of the empire, the “justness & right balance” of it. “Threesomes” aren’t conducive to social hierarchy and thus must be repressed; I don’t agree with this, by the way. It’s Bullshit! But for the time being, the ruling bodies have degreed it thus, and so it remains. I should mention I find no opposition from my wife to my “needs,” just a request to conduct the campaign with some discretion. Grin, well, of course I do anyway. So, to wrap it up, old hierarchical me, Mr. Solid & Stable 4-Block Emperor Mark the Stolid is my albatross on this particular side journey, and I need to throw that fucking dead bird overboard.  Oops! The tap just ran dry on Old Mark ’52. Pay up! LOL. I ask the Cosmos to give us all a bit of leeway & understanding today when regarding our own desires. Be Well!
Good morning and Welcome! to The Fool’s Tarot for 29Aug2016. (Today’s deck is *The Ancient Egyptian Tarot* by Clive Barrett. It’s alright as far as it goes, and there is certainly nothing wrong with the mechanics of this deck, but the art is FLAT. None of the art seems to have any heart or soul or “movement” to it, it becomes just a collection of what I would call “antimacassar lovely” vignettes: nothing to make your 85-year old good, Christian (Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist) grandmother sit up and take notice; just a mumbled “That’s nice, dear . . .” before she floats off into the vaps. Oh well, I suppose that if Norman Rockwell can be considered American art (yecch!) then this could be considered Egyptian themed – however, I can’t shake the notion that Clive is actually the fey young brother of Elizabeth Barret Browning and lies in a seeping pool of tedium, spoiled melancholy and masturbatory delusions of being an artist. But no, that’s just my imagination . . . .) Here we are at the start of the week, just a few days from when I need to reopen the shop doors and get back to something more ordered and reliable for the daily blab. Right NOW the problem is that I KNOW what I want to present as a new spread with a specified purpose and structured progression. However, it is FAR too big to do on a daily basis. I must find a solution . . . (pacing my laboratory, idly snapping off children’s fingers & toes in their cages lined against the wall of my study –unbaptized children have so many uses.) (Grin.) Yet, as much as I like and appreciate The Scales of Ma’at spread, I long for another shorty to lend a different lens to my days for a while. On verra. In the meantime, I am temporizing with this simple 2-card reading, a Point/Counterpoint spread. Intended to give a direction to the day, meditationally & goal-oriented ; the 1st card is where you are in the best use of your faculties and energies today, where you “should” be going; the 2nd card represents whatever stands in opposition to your progress, that which provides resistance in your day. I have pulled the Queen of Swords and the 7 of Wands, respectively, so let’s take a quick look at where I need to be focusing today.  The Queen of Swords is the element Water (here) in Air. AKA the Queen of the Thrones of Air, in astrology she strides from Virgo to Libra. She is, of course, in Yetzirah and her station is the Sephiroth Binah. “She supplies the qualities of emotion and sensitivity to the airy element, the ability to transfer and reflect, to form and create. As the mother of the Air, she will
have a strong intellect.” (Raven) Thus my keywords for today COULD be: Independence, freedom of mind and soul, Wisdom, imagination, self-confidence, perceptivity, grace. Well, if I HAVE to be, I suppose I shall {{sigh.}} (Grin.) However, I am to be crossed today, it seems, by the 7 of Wands, AKA (normally) Valor, but not in this deck, as It follows the Egyptian style. In our reading today, this 7 actually stands for conflicts of all kinds. Mars if powering Leo, lending perseverance against heavy odds and courage in adversity. Well, I’m glad courage is there, but WHAT adversity?? It also stands for an ambitious and egotistical nature with pride as the pitfall. This is almost like the card of an extremist or fanatic, and if it more clearly indicated me somewhere, it would signal stubbornness, which I possess by the assload anyway. Well, that is what stands in my way today, and I can only draw the conclusion that this heartfelt opposition to following the Queen of Swords is mine; is, in fact, me. It’s true that I am a stubborn old coot, that I have good moral character (even if I say so myself) and that I am loathe to listen to others when convinced I am right. That ISN’T cool, but then, being totally Queenly in the Swords isn’t that cool, either; she is dangerous enough and focused enough to be a complete raging bitch if handled badly, and I know as I used to watch a Queen of Swords (my mother, to the hilt when she “hit center stage,” the performance was ON. Please understand me; I loved my mother, but I am not now nor was I then blind. She was a raging Queen of Swords a goodly amount of time; she was also what I call a “high-maintenance woman.” If you do not have the money, time or intelligence to devote to one of these “exotic Italian sports cars,” I suggest you not even THINK of going there. Being around one of those types has a long-lasting effect on the height of your defenses; they are usually UNusually high.) However, my mother being dead, I think it far more likely that THAT kind of opposition may come from what’s still inside of her that is inextricably woven into the warp & weft of me. I shall deal with it/her if/when she raises that snake-haired head, but I find ignoring her is usually the best way to draw her fangs for a quick getaway. If this were “bigger” than a CoTD reading, I would spend more time concentration on that opposition, but it isn’t so I won’t. Okay, let’s get on with it. I ask the Cosmos to give us ALL a singularly good dose of “Alright, let’s get it done!”-ness today. Be Well!

Good afternoon and Welcome! to The Fool’s Tarot for 27Aug2016: it came to me this morning that I wanted to look more deeply at XX Judgement today; I don’t know why, but my brain usually has a reason it does these things . . . usually. (Today’s deck is *The Tarot of the Holy Light* by Christine Payne-Towler & Michael Dowers. I’m going to go way out on a limb and say, “If there were only one deck to help the modern journeyer towards enlightenment, this is it.” Now of course that is TOO drastic, but I wanted to emphasize how EXCELLENT this deck is. You SHOULD NOT BE WITHOUGHT THIS. That is if you are following Tarot as a path of self-enlightenment, of course; if you are using Tarot for other reasons, such as divination etc. then it is as good a deck as any other. But c’mon, you’re not going to waste this deck on divination, are you? Finding lost change purses for old ladies and screwable men for biologically active women?  Nah . . . save that shit for when you do carnivals with a Thoth and an Erik C. Dunne –they come emotionally unglued with the Dunne decks.) Christine’s accompany book, *Tarot of the Holy Light: A Continental Esoteric Tarot* with Michael Dowers (illus.), Noreah/Brownfield Press, Cathlamet, 2015. Is a MUST-HAVE if you plan on working with this deck, the symbolism is so rich, Rococo, Baroque, under- and over- layed and rich from all ages that each card becomes a treasure chest found in a pirate’s cave, stuffed to the brim with pearls, rubies, emeralds, diamonds & gold, each nugget a whole new world of inquiry because the nuggets are giving you answers left & right, almost quicker than you can absorb them. XX Judgement, the letter R, Saturn, from Tiphareth to Yesod, and, lest we forget in all the revelations, bringer of Peace. This is “the sounding of the Divine Word into matter: the Call.” Doves of election embracing the All, and the descent of Sophia (Divine Wisdom) into the world. Here is where one of the most critical steps of the Path occurs; the soul must separate itself from matter as it answers the Call, it “then it casts aside The Ladder of Lights to discover its eternal identity. The self, the soul, the Call, and the angel are one.” Isn’t that beautiful? Boy, do I want to be there! There is more to know here, of course, LOTS more to know; energy called Daat, The Fallen Tree and some of its connections, as w<ell as what I considered a good joke; the division of Sophianics into “Catholic” and “Protestant” supporters – if that doesn’t make you laugh, then you’re not cynical enough . . . yet. And now, a big chunk to swallow but important - “At this point we can fully survey the heavenly forces alive within the power of desire (the Star of David described by all six trumps of this sequence.) That desire has now evolved through the whole descending trine and is in the third stage of the responsive trine, finally settling into the fully-balanced pattern of the Star of David. Judgement grants the awakening of the power of the Word, the (often internal) magical voice.” (Payne-Towler) Yes, it is ALL very heavyweight stuff, but we should be able to bear that, being this far along the Journey, right? LOL, well, yes, for those who are there, and for those who aren’t either a “Congratulations!” or to those yet to be tested, “Courage! It isn’t what you think.” Judgment falls into Empress/Emperor/Strength/Temperance-land for me personally: it’s a good place to visit, but not to hang; the weather patterns are too changeable. Grin. “She’s” a friend, or at least I have always considered hir so.” I like the Judgement I discovered for a few hours today, digging around and reading in various tomes and then sitting back with a cup of tea & my cat on my lap, contemplating my lack of fear before that particular concept – BTW, that isn’t new work, I just simply have never been afraid of Death, and if it involved some hind of “calling into account,” I was okay with that, too, simply because I had decided long ago that being human came inbuilt with ALL of his flaws. I’m rather “dudist” about it; “ya, like, know, ya’ know man? That rug tied the room together!” (*The Big Liebowsky*) I’m down with Judgement, to cut to the short of it. I do hope you are, too, and if you aren’t, you need to get up off that ass and move it down the road, brothers & sisters! LOL. I ask the Cosmos today for a feeling of accomplishment for us ALL as we prepare for the voyage beyond the Gate of Judgement. Be Well!

Good morning and Welcome! to The Fool’s Tarot for 24Aug2016. I must suppose that old habits die hard, because I am “on vacation;” nevertheless, after the usual start-the-day chores I automatically set up my reading space and drew two cards. Now, one card I could have excused and justified to myself, but two? Nope. Admit it, pal, you’re “homesick” for The Scales of Ma’at readings! “Alright! Alright! I’ll admit the truth, just no more Pentothal! I DO miss them, but I am NOT going to turn today into one, so do your worst!!” Just between you & me, OF COURSE I’m going to do that “in my head,” but I AM trying to take a light approach, after all it’s a vacation. Harrumph! Lazily performing my morning reading (as opposed to with some seriousness, clarity & humility of spirit) I decided to pick a deck at random out of a storage box full of them that are NOT in rotation; I grabbed *Le Tarot des Templiers* by S. Mayorca. It is a French deck, and the author is an initiate in the revived Order, it seems, and his historical research “seems” to be spot-on (I am NOT in any way, shape or form an expert on the Order; I only claim a passing knowledge of their history & above all their OCCULT history, which has been so badly mangled by the Roman Catholic Church and the French state, of which it may be said to be largely composed of French Freemasons. [The circles of power/corruption are VERY tight and VERY obvious here in France.] The deck draws me; not powerfully, but it does. We shall see what we shall see.) I drew the 8 of Pentacles? Um –hmm; Okay, well, I’m not off to a bad start. (“Start? Vacation, jack, vacation!”) (“Oh shut the fuck up.”) I’m mirroring the Compass Rose, it seems, and boy! doesn’t THAT scream “direction”! It also states, a little more quietly, that the Perfect Equilibrium is maintained between Above & Below, between what is visible and invisible. The French LWB gives a divinatory meaning that is interesting; a rigueur in Justice and honesty in dealing with inheritance and legacies. It indicates an ability to learn and to possess a dialectical ease with sincerity. Okay, so, “Shoulder to the grindstone and be an ‘honest merchant,’ Mark.” The first part is a bit irksome, but I am always (I hope) an honest “merchant.” Which reminds me of a question I wanted to ask any readers; If you were to bill yourself out to clients yourself, with Tarot as part of the package but your “product” being “the total experience of you, your knowledge, your all,” at what price would you bill an hour’s worth of your time? You are not a crook, you are going to give it your very best shot each & every time you are hired; so, what are you worth?
Moving on . . . I couldn’t resist, I drew a second card, which would have been the Feather of Truth card otherwise, and pulled XVIII the Moon, or as the deck prefers, “18 Le Visage de Séléne.” The Major Arcana carry individual Hermetic Messages; the HM for XVIII is “I am your source. The Mother Goddess, Seal of the night.” If this were the Feather of Truth card, then I could break it down and see the what, why, when, where and how of the Truth that is relevant to me by looking to XVIII the Moon, not the card but the concept manifesting somewhere in my life today. However, it ISN’T the Feather of Truth card – I did not intend that when I drew the reading. This is good, because that means I can’t drop it in its handy “Feather” slot and thus assume comprehension. “So, Astro, keep your eyes peeled and let me know if you see Selene snooping around in my files, okay?” “Woof!” The Moon is a 2; it could be a long wait, as she is geared for passive receptivity. On verra. Otherwise, the LWB gives this trump a strictly traditional interpretation, which no matter how you word or cosmeticize it, is all about waxing (& waning) romantic in the moonlight, but beware of unhealthy attachments to the past and oh, yes, BTW, you may have psychic gifts. As I said, traditional to the teeth. But that is okay, because that isn’t exactly the message I get from XVIII. (Another stray thought; the cards are all the same for everybody, yet the cards are all unique & potent speakers for YOU only insomuch as you agree to NOT take them for granted.) She may then start giving you your own feedback back; enslaved to material things, feelings of insecurity, treacheries and dangers. You really ARE a paranoid fucker, aren’t you? LOL. Let it be, let it be. I go to the Moon with open arms and an erect phallus; she demands that. With her infinite wellspring of mystic femininity, she can evoke either desire or terror . . . so tell me, how do YOU see women? Grin. Well, that’s enough blathering today without structure or purpose; I need to return to the dissatisfaction of enforced leisure. I ask the Cosmos today to bless us ALL with a bit of spiritual tranquility today as we contemplate the ebb & flow of our lives. Be Well!

Good morning and Welcome! to The Fool’s Tarot for 23Aug2016. I have displayed several cards from *The Wildwood Tarot* by Mark Ryan, John Matthews and Will Worthington. I love the images but disagree with some of the changes made to “the Tarot” by this deck; beside following the wrong side (IMHO) of the VIII – XI controversy, some other ideas are, as I see it, not really “copacetic” with Indian lore and “natural” lifestyle. Be that as it may, you may love it without fear of reprisals from me, at any rate. I simply find it disingenuous. I ask the Cosmos to give us the critical eye necessary at the right time today. Be Well!

Good morning and Welcome! to The Fool’s Tarot for 22Aug2016. Being “on vacation,” for the moment I’m posting peripatetically on this or that card, or facet of Tarot. Today, I am presenting XIV Art, from the *Tabula Mundi Tarot* by M. M. Meleen. This is the color Majors-only edition; I have both the B & W full deck and am expecting the full color deck as soon as it is published. Ms. Meleen’s entire package, from A to Z & including both Tarot art and eponymous accompanying guide book, are of exquisite workmanship and a profound and studied knowledge of Tarot. I would say that it isn’t a Tarot for everybody, and I don’t believe it was meant to be. This is a profound deck for the profound student; in other words, be serious if you are going to use this deck. [Otherwise, I’ll be forced to stop this car and you & I will have a little “talk” at the roadside rest area. You don’t want that, trust me. BIG GRIN.] ) Let’s dive right into Mel’s book, “Book M: Liber Mundi* by M. M. Meleen, Atu House Pub., Barre, 2015.

"I am the true green and Golden Lion without cares. In me all the secrets of the Philosophers are hidden.” “Who the hell is the green and Golden Lion of Alchemy?” you demand. Easy enough; he is the Lovers (of VI fame) combined now as a Dianic personification (Diane, goddess of the hunt & Moon) (see pg. 46 ibid.)Then Ms. Meleen digresses lightly into V.I.T.R.I.O.L. – ring any bells? Here it stands in its original meaning, in Latin, of Visita Interiora Terrae rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem. “You will find that by correcting the secret things of the Earth [you will] Visit the interiors of the stone.” The Philosopher’s Stone, one assumes (“of course, you phool!”) My earliest memory of Vitriol is from when I was about 5 or 6 years old and watched the film *The Phantom of the Opera* (the Claude Rains version) where, upon finally being involved in a violent altercation with the music publisher, the fight erupts and the publisher’s assistant throws acid into Claude’s face. As he runs moaning from the office, clutching his face, the camera swings back to a close-up on the bottle, and it is labelled “VITRIOL.” So, in alchemy, it is the universal solvent (as is water in Malkuth) yet it had been presented to the public as the most horrible of acids. Ah-ha, interesting, that, eh? This is STILL the old familiar card of the “female” angelic being pouring water either from one cup to another or mixing them together in a pool in front of her. Add a rainbow, maybe, scatter a few stars, and for $5 more, we’ll throw in a lucky fish. It is simply that the alchemical principles behind that card have come forth to shine in their own beauty rather than distracting the attention with a representative tableau of Sunday school images. In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit to a long, very long, intimate personal relationship with XIV; and much like an ex-wife (or so I assume, having none) she pops in from time to time just to be sure I remember her and to be prompt with the check (grin.) Actually, she and I ARE good buddies, & I’ve needed her reminders a LOT over the years; I am “extreme” by nature. Back to the card – Oh, Look! It isn’t Easter! Hurray! Lol, no, but it IS an egg, the Orphic Egg present in a LOT of alchemical & metaphysical illustrations. Everything on this card is in combination with its complement or its opposite; it is, after all, about Blending, Tempering, improving force and tensile strength with the hammerblows of experience & situation. Tempering is a beneficial process, not only for improving the Materia prima, the basic substance of manifestation, but for an emotional washback of good feeling and “all’s-right-with-the-world” vibes; it lends a solid feeling of substantiality, well-being and usefulness that is for all intents and purposes a Divine Indwelling and re-establishment of order (as opposed to the chaos of the undistilled & raw,) of Ma’at. On the arcane side of things, we have XIV as Sagittarius with Jupiter in an exalted Dragon’s Tail; there is the fact that XIV is on Path 25 from Tiphareth to Yesod, and that his color scale is vivid & basic. I can and do process all of that type of information in my head, but My Valhalla! it makes for dry writing and reading, so I shall spare all of us. If it is really important to you, get out your astrolabes and your star charts and tables; book yourself a flight to one of the ancient astronomical observation platforms around the world; work only at night, on site, by the light on one poorly-made candle. Book a flight home. Contemplate the profundity and mystery of your discoveries from the soup kitchen for the homeless. LOL.  No, thank you – I believe that is why we have astrologers, to do all of that “hard, slugging shit” for us, and deliver the results on a clean silver platter while we occupy ourselves with finding ways to pay for their services and our style of life. Harrumph! No, I won’t sneak any socialism in through the back door today; to those who don’t know me well, it appears too much like hypocrisy, too much “do as I say, not as I do.” However, it never hurts to remind ourselves that TEMPERING ourselves means every part of ourselves; you CAN NOT create a work of Art, much less beauty and divine inspiration, without a great deal of commitment to change and self-sacrifice. Only by balancing all of these elements will we ever even begin to approach transmutation. I ask the Cosmos today for a willing spirit for us ALL, in order to get on with the sacrifice of work and the work of sacrifice. Be Well!

Good morning and Welcome! to the Fool’s Tarot for 21aug2016 : I continue to “be on vacation” and thus the things I am “throwing up on the board” are, if you like, my version of Mardi Gras beads or product giveaways; worth very little in and of themselves, they invite you into a deeper, more full and conscious relationship with the art/science of Tarot. I hope to return in September to regular daily blogging with a new layout and new approach, or even perhaps a new gimmick; I know! I’ll do videocasts on YouTube wearing absolutely nothing but a tinfoil hat and a pair of ratty-looking wings made out of an old RWS deck. LOL! Don’t count on it, readers! At any rate, here’s today’s tidbit, which came to me last night as something to post this morning as I was contemplating a GD deck. So, have fun today; do as Mommy & Daddy ask you and don’t take candy from the strange man outside the school. I ask the Cosmos today to shoot a little humor and lightness into everybody’s Path today. Be Well!

The Lovers are the sacred alchemical marriage.
The marriage of the Sun and the Moon.
The conjoined Yin and Yang.
This is the first serious work required in order to make
The journey to a full life.
The internal union of the opposites.
A great deal of hard work is required to achieve a real
Partnership, to harmonize the internal male and female
Energies, to blend the right-brain and left-brain aspects
Of intelligence, and to marry all the pairs of opposites.
There is no real love without equality.
This is not a summer romance.
Not a Camelot quest for the object of your affection.
This won’t be found at the end of the rainbow.
It’s not a love affair with an external partner.
It does not describe a childish fantasy.
This is the work of becoming a well-rounded and
Balanced person. A whole person.
Have you brought yourself into balance?
What must you do to bring your male and female selves
Into equality?
Does your masculine or your feminine side need to be
Strengthened?
Are you ready to proceed on the journey?
Will you be able to move forward?

Good morning and Welcome! to the Fool’s Tarot for 20aug2016. As previously stated, the blog is on “semi-vacation” until September, when I hope to be back with a new card layout and several differences. Not too many, I assure you. So, in the meantime, while you await the creation of my overabundant imagination and twin fascinations with Egypt and Tarot, I will “fill” the space with something which I hope will at least snare your interest. Today, it is the Alchemical marriage. So, until September, “Hasta la vista, baby!”
